Transition into the Professional Nursing Role

Being one of the most in-demand professions in the healthcare field, nursing is a highly challenging occupation which requires a solid understanding and application of specific knowledge and skills. As a forthcoming BSN graduate, I understand that in order to build a successful career here in Florida, apart from striving to show high academic performance results, I should search for employment opportunities and build prospects for the lifetime learning in the chosen field.

It is a well-known fact that as in any other professional field, nursing practice requires licensing. According to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing or NCSBN (2011), “licensure benefits both the public and the individual nurse by assuring the safe practice of nursing” (p. 11). As the main coordinative body, the NCSBN has developed two examinations for obtaining a license, the NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN that are held locally by the Boards of Nursing of each state (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2011). Referring to the Florida Board of Nursing, one may ascertain that Chapter 464 of the Florida Statutes prescribes the requirements for licensure. Section 464.008 of the Statutes stipulates that a person must graduate from a nursing education program or military nursing program approved or accredited in Florida, or given NCLEX code by the NCSBN (Florida Board of Nursing, n.d.). Apart from that, the Florida Statute requires that an individual should provide sufficient information on any criminal records he or she has; moreover, a person should have good physical and mental health, and demonstrate working command of English (The 2016 Florida statutes, n.d.).

Having conducted a BSN graduate job search in Florida, I can state that the amount of Registered Nurse positions offered for recent graduates is quite limited, especially those related to public health nursing. The sweeping majority of vacancies requires at least 1-2 years of work experience, which is currently inapplicable to me. Among the most suitable options I found were the two RN positions in the Florida Hospital Orlando open for online submission. The first one is the RN in the emergency department; the position requires a valid RN license, AHA BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications (Florida Hospital, 2016). Recurrently, the job advertisement states that a minimum of 1 year of experience is advantageous and beneficial. The second vacancy seems to be more suitable for me because the practical job training of new graduate nurses is the aim of this position. The requirements include knowledge of EKG, BLS certification and the relevant professional certification (Florida Hospital, n.d.).

Holistic Life Balance

I believe that during the first year as a RN at the Florida Hospital Orlando I will be totally immersed in the working process. Some authors notice that the nursing profession is often accompanied by burnout, “emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishments” (Finkelman & Kenner, 2010, p. 121). To avoid this, I will utilize my evenings and weekends devoting my time to sports, hiking and yoga, that will help me to keep both body and mind fit. Within a five-year period, I plan to focus more on the public health management which is a less stressful field. I will spend my free time on social activities and arrange public health initiatives with my associates.

Stressors and Challenges

The position of a RN is a challenging one due to the fact it requires significant dedication and diligence, as a RN takes the major responsibility for the well-being of patients providing primary care services, planning, aiding the doctors during operations, and fulfills managerial and administrative functions (Burton & Ludwig, 2014). The key stress factors in nursing include high workload, unpleasant and monotonous tasks, poor working conditions, anxiety, panic, dealing with deaths, patients’ problems, discrimination, lack of leadership, and conflicts with physicians (Mark & Smith, 2012). During the first year of my work, I will try to isolate myself from negative emotions of my consciousness by focusing on the good essence of my work. I will seek for support of my colleagues if possible, and learn to tolerate the most grieving events. In five years, I will further develop leadership qualities and take initiatives to minimize conflicts.

Lifelong Learning

As I have already mentioned, the sphere of my outstanding interest is the public health management. Within the first year of my professional activitiy, I will improve my skills as a health care agency staff by attending educational events and training offered by the Florida Hospital Orlando. In a five years’ perspective, I consider applying for a part-time study program in one of the Florida universities to obtain Master’s degree in Healthcare Management. This will give me a chance to receive a relevant confirmation of my skills such as the ANCC Advanced Public Health Nursing board certificate (American Nurses Credentialing Center, n.d.).

Professional Contributions

My ultimate personal goal is to become a fully developed individuality and to realize my potential as a healthcare manager completely. I want to be a decent member of the nursing community and bring positive changes into the modern nursing practices. In addition to my professional engagements, I will do this through the prospective active participation in the work of the Florida Nurses Association. This is the major nursing advocacy organization in my state, which also supports scientific research initiatives and acts as a guardian for nursing policies and healthcare in Florida (Florida Nurses Association, n.d.). I will attend when possible the meetings of the Florida Board of Nursing as well. Over the next five years, I intend to publish a range of articles on challenges of modern healthcare management in American Nurse Today Journal and to formulate a set of advanced measures of monitoring the health situation in Florida.
