Personal ethics is distinguished from business and legal ethics because they do not emanate from personal conscience, but their manipulation comes from the organizations. Personal ethics is crucial because it can affect the whole society or organization. Notably, one of the most significant personal values that a person should have especially under the fields of nursing is passion. Passion is the value/ethic that pushes one to work because one understands the reason he is at that specific place. Nursing as a field, has its own values, ethics, and morals that may differ with person ethics. Nevertheless, people working under this field must oblige by them if they want to prosper in their career.

Personal, Cultural and Spiritual Values that Contribute to Worldview and Philosophy of Nursing

Nursing is a vital field of study because a nurse is the most important person to the patient. According to Martin Benjamin and Joy Curtis (2010), nurses are the ones who care for the patients when they are sick, healed, and even when they die. In relation to that, there are cultural, personal, and spiritual values that contribute to the philosophy of nursing thus, helping the nurses.

Firstly, there is the personal value of compassion. The field of nursing requires individuals to be compassionate when working because he/she is dealing with critical issues. Personal compassion helps nurses understand that they are at that specific place because nursing is their profession and they have to care for patients effectively, no matter how serious the problem is. This value is among the most significant personal values a nurse should possess because it is also under the nursing philosophy and worldwide view of nursing.

Secondly, the value for life falls under the spiritual value. Both Christians and Muslims cherish the value of life, and this applies to the field of nursing too. Butts and Rich (2012) assert that a person working under this field should value and protect the life of patients who need him/her most. Spiritual values, such as these, contribute significantly to the philosophy of nursing, as the nurses become more responsible and dedicated to their work due to the value of the life of patients.

Effects of Nursing Values

The values discussed above have both positive and negative effects on nursing. The positive effects are that the personal philosophy of passion leads to high performance by the nurses because they have compassion in what they are doing, and respond to patient’s needs as expected.

However, these values can also lead to negative effects in the field of nursing. The best example is some of the spiritual values. Some denominations believe only God can heal and for that reason man should not waste his time trying to offer treatment. This affects nursing as a profession because it may lead to negligence.

Definition of Values, Morals and Ethics in the Context of My Obligation to Nursing

Values are the beliefs that the nurses should possess on the well-being of patients or actions that they are required to possess while treating the patient. The main advantage of values is that they enable a nurse make sound decisions while treating the patient.

Morals are the rules that enable nurses to distinguish between right and wrong in their daily routine of caring out treatments. Additionally, they help in decision-making. They function almost in the same manner as the required values.

Lastly, ethic refers to the rules and regulations that govern nursing as a profession. Korver and Howard (2008) confirm that these rules are vital in the career of nurses, and they need to obey them.

How My Personal Value May Conflict with My Obligation Practice

Nursing as a profession has its own ethics that govern the body. However, there are personal values that may be parallel with these ethics thus, creating ethical dilemmas. The best example is while dealing with euthanasia. According to me, euthanasia is against God’s will and thus, sinful. However, the patient’s family can require a nurse to perform euthanasia on their patient based on different reasons. My personal value and moral may hinder me from doing that though the nursing ethics too state that you obey the rules.

Personal Views Regarding Ethical and Moral Dilemmas You May Face in the Health Care Field

Healthcare field just like any other professional field has its own ethics and moral values. These values can at times cause dilemmas because it may be difficult for a nurse to abide by them due to varying levels of personal ethics. Nursing ethics may encourage things like euthanasia or abortion when in your personal view you know abortion is a sin. This will automatically cause dilemmas.
